REVIEW
Q : Briefly tell us about your company, and its history. What kind of services you offer?
A : I'm a graphic designer, but my passions and inspirations live in many areas of art and design. I like to pursue original ideas on each project, and I make an effort to not only design effective visual communication, but to show the target user or consumer what's unique and memorable about each project I work on. I design logos, brands and identities, websites, other interactive materials, full campaigns, posters, album art, and more.
Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?
A: The way I experience the world is my biggest inspiration. Experiences can be on a large or small scale. Aesthetically, I find inspiration in music, art, other designers' work, architecture, fashion, all kinds of visual and sensory experiences. Intellectually, I find inspiration in a range of ideas, from how people interact with the government, to how they interact with a cup of tea. Transitioning to design, I think about how people interact with a business, all the way down to how they interact with a business card. All of those things go into thinking about how someone will experience whatever it is I'm currently designing. Design is really about providing people with meaningful experiences. Graphic design creates the visual memories that accompany them.
Q : You selected MorningPrint's Frosty PET plastic product (new product). Have you had experience with printing on plastic before? Why did you select this stock?
A: This was my first time printing on plastic, but I knew the look of the Frosty PET would set my business card apart from others, and still hold consistent with the visual feel of the new portfolio site I'm working on. My site has a light and airy feel that only a frosted plastic could emulate.
Q : Most business cards are generally oriented horizontally, how and why did you decide to go with a vertical format?
A: When designing anything, it's important to not get hung up on how things are typically done, but to think about what is best for your particular project. Sometimes the answer is still the same as what's typical, but in this project, it wasn't. I tried both vertical and horizontal layouts, but my content best fit in a vertical format, which is great because although vertical cards are becoming more common, they are still less common than horizontal, and more likely to stand out.
Q : Would you consider this stock for a future print?
A: I absolutely would. The plastic is hefty enough to hold up as a business card, attractive enough to stand out in a positive way, and although I prefer a thick paper card, the plastic works great at a thinner weight; plus I can carry more cards at once. Also, I've gotten quite a few compliments on my cards already.
Q : Your business card shares minimal information but we find it to be very effective. How do you decided what information will be contained on the card when you are designing for yourself or others?
A: I include only what is needed to make a compelling card, nothing more and nothing less. Designing for something as small as a business card, there's no room for extra information and no room for error; the card has to be memorable, and it has to work. The ultimate goal is to get people keep your card FOREVER, and to follow the calls to action on the card, be it a phone call, an email, or typing your website into the browser.
Q : Any tips for our clients to consider when they are creating their business cards?
A: If you can afford it, hire a designer. It just so happens that I know a good one...:) visit elialso.com, or email me at van3li@yahoo.com. Mention this interview, and I'll give you a 10% discount on your first project. If you can't afford a designer, my best advice is to keep your design simple, it gives you the least opportunity to mess anything up, and looks the most professional considering it's not professionally designed. Don't overly decorate; only include visuals and information that's directly related to you or your business.
Q : Did you experience any difficulties when using MorningPrint.com, or find anything to be inconvenient or inefficient?
A: No, it was a quick and easy process. I did however try to make a change to the file I submitted, and could not because of how Morning Print's printing process is set up (it's the same reason they're so fast.) But, customer service was helpful and friendly throughout the whole issue, and my business cards turned out great.
